College host to fourth annual CARE Conference for childcare providers

Cowley College was host to its fourth annual Cowley CARE Conference on Aug. 5 at the Brown Center. The conference consisted of nine presenters, one keynote presentation, lunch and vendor booths. Including licensed childcare providers, 42 area early childhood educators attended the event. “The day went smooth and the flow was great,” said Janet Davidson, Cowley College director of child care and development. “I really enjoyed watching the professionals network (with) each other. The purpose of this day is to collaborate, network, celebrate, and enhance the quality of early childhood education within our community and surrounding areas. I look forward to this event each year. With the professional development hours increasing this year within the field of child care, I look forward to meeting even more educators next year.” Davidson also thanked the college for the use of the facilities and all the individuals who helped to make this event happen. The theme for this year’s conference was “Ready! Set! TEACH!” The busy day started at 7:30 a.m. with 14 vendors, a light breakfast and registration. The conference itself started at 8 a.m. with an opening keynote session directed by Beth Reeder, who presented “Let’s Get Physical.” The session was very interactive, with music and dancing. Arkansas City Farm and Art Market plans Family Fun Night on Aug. 15

The Arkansas City Farm and Art Market will be host to a Family Fun Night from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 15. This evening of family-friendly fun will feature live music on the Wilson Park rotunda stage by Troy Pulver. There also will be food trucks, a bouncy house for kids, face painting and family games on the lawn. Families can enjoy the creations of local artists and shop for fresh, locally grown produce. Among the food offerings at the event will be Yolly Cranford’s spring egg rolls and rice. There also will be free cantaloupe bowls filled with ice cream given to the first 20 children in attendance. Colorful Events Bakery will give away a wedding cake credit worth $300. All in attendance can register for the drawing. Vendor tables will offer hot pans of fresh cinnamon rolls, locally crafted essential oils and gift products, snow cones for kids, one-of-a-kind clothing, home décor, cakes, farm-fresh eggs, pottery, five-minute chair massages, children’s photography, hot peppers, melons, berries, environmentally friendly bags, and more. Cowley College freshman Oak picked as 2017 P.E.O. scholarship recipient

Madison Oak, a 2017 graduate of Arkansas City High School, is the recipient of a 2017 scholarship from P.E.O. Chapter GH. Oak is the daughter of Jon and Tammy Oak, of Arkansas City. Oak was presented with $500 toward her education from the women’s philanthropic education organization. She will continue her education at Cowley College in the fall to study nursing. Following graduation from Cowley College, Oak’s plans include attending Wichita State University. Her career goal is to work as a pediatric hospital nurse, beginning at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Wichita and ultimately working for one of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospitals. Oak recently complete a Certified Nursing Assistant class at Cowley College. “I didn’t always have a passion for nursing,” she said. “I grew up with other dreams and aspirations, until I turned 13. “In middle school, my best friend, Autumn, passed away after battling leukemia. Watching her deal with the cancer and the way it destroyed her not only physically, but emotionally, it was then I realized I wanted to do something where I could actually help people and do whatever I could do to make them feel better.” At Arkansas City High School, Oak was active in sports, including basketball and softball.
