Cowley College president shares thoughts on state of higher education

WINFIELD — Cowley College President Dennis Rittle joined Southwestern College President Brad Andrews in sharing their thoughts on the state of higher education as it relates to their respective institutions during the Lunch Bites on Aug. 31 at the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce. “The purpose of this Lunch Bites was to give chamber members and community members an opportunity to hear an update from our largest educational institutions,” said Sarah Werner, chief executive officer of the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce. “It is important for them to stay up to date on what is happening at those institutions.” Following Andrews’ update on the positive things happening at Southwestern College, Rittle shared information on advancing a generation of learners and a vibrant community, as well as new partnerships, fiscal values and responsibility, student success and community involvement, and partnerships. “It is always great as a community college to be able to share not only the joys and successes, but also the challenges we face with community members, because it is a partnership,” Rittle said. “I also enjoy the opportunity for members of the community to share with me what their thoughts are, because we are only successful as partners.” Cowley agreements, new programs Rittle informed those in attendance about the recent 2+2 articulation agreement in engineering that was signed between Cowley College and Wichita State University. Alderbrook Village to launch new Alzheimer’s educational series next week

Alderbrook Village will start an educational series next week, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association. Starting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12, the four-part series will take place once a month, ending Dec. 12. These classes are free and open to anyone in the Arkansas City community. “Our educational series will be held every second Tuesday at 6:30,” said Alderbrook Village’s Cindy Kegley. “This program is an effort to help our community and to support them in any way we can. There are over 44 million worldwide and more than 5 million people in the United States living with some form of dementia. “It is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. We are focused on caregivers, being that there are over 15 million American caregivers.” Steve Harader, with Home Buddy, will be the first guest speaker. Oct. 14 will feature speaker Rachael Carrell, of RNBC. Sarah Long, with the South Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging, will speak Nov. 14. The final speaker of the series will be a representative from the Alzheimer’s Association. Refreshments will be provided at each session. Alzheimer’s support group Alderbrook Village also is host to a new monthly Alzheimer’s caregiver support group.
