Cowley College hosts, Quiz Bowl team competes in successful Snow Bowl

The Collegiate Quiz Bowl — formerly known as Academic Excellence Challenge — team at Cowley College was host Dec. 2 to the Snow Bowl at the college’s main campus in Arkansas City. A total of seven schools and 12 teams took part in the Snow Bowl, which was won by Johnson County (8-0). Coffeyville placed second with a record of 7-1. “The day was successful in that we represented Cowley College well, even if we did not get the top team awards,” said Collegiate Quiz Bowl (CQB) coach Dianne Flickinger. Aimee Schwintz, 10th place; Matthew Sinnett, 11th place; and Kamdon Fuqua, 15th place, were the top three individuals on Cowley’s A and B teams for the day. “Kamdon showed the greatest improvement at this tournament,” Flickinger said. “He was placed on the B team because he did not make the top four players based on our scrimmage in Neosho on Oct. 14, but he continues to improve. I had asked Cowley President Dennis Rittle to visit our practice in November to talk about the dynamics of teamwork. “Kamdon took the information to heart and decided he had more to offer the team than what he had been given. No school Feb. 28, 2018: Ark City Public School District updates calendar

The Arkansas City Public School District has updated its 2017-18 calendar to provide instructional and support staff with a professional learning and development day. Recently, the USD 470 Board of Education approved designating Feb. 28, 2018, as a no-school day for this purpose. The professional development opportunity will focus on technology, creativity and finding the best tools to serve students. “While we regret any inconvenience this calendar change may cause,” said USD 470 Superintendent Ron Ballard, “we believe this will be a truly beneficial experience for our staff and ultimately for our students.” An updated 2017-18 calendar can be found at www.usd470.com. Student Showcase to take place Dec. 5 in Cowley College’s Wright Room

Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City will be host a Student Showcase on Dec. 5 in the Earle N. Wright Community Room. The event will begin at 7 p.m. with a performance by the Cowley Jazz Band. The showcase will include students studying creative writing, poetry writing, screenwriting, mass communications, graphic design and art. There also will be a recital of vocal students at 6:30 p.m. prior to the reception and showcase that is free and open to the public.
