More than 300 pounds of unused or expired prescription drugs were collected by local law enforcement officials on National Drug Take Back Day this year.

“This was a combined effort by the Arkansas City Police Department, (the) Winfield Police Department and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office,” said Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications.

Last year, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration collected a record-setting amount of medications during this event.

A total of 310 pounds of various drugs were collected in Cowley County this year.
