An Arkansas City man was arrested on drug and firearms charges May 17 following a chase by local law enforcement late that night.

The chase began after Cowley County sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a red Ford Mustang in the 13000 block of U.S. 166, according to Sheriff Don Read.

The driver, Sage Breeze Martin, 32, of Arkansas City, committed a traffic violation, failed to maintain a single lane of travel, was driving left of center and was not using his headlights.

Martin failed to pull over when the deputies turned on their emergency lights.

They pursued the vehicle east on U.S. 166 to 151st Road, where Martin made a U-turn in the middle of the intersection and deputies were able to confirm his identity.

They discovered that Martin had an active Arkansas City Municipal Court warrant for his arrest.

He fled westbound on U.S. 166 and passed another vehicle without signaling his intentions to pass in the 12000 block of U.S. 166.

Law enforcement officers deployed spike strips in the 11000 block of U.S. 166, where the vehicle hit them and its two front tires were flattened.

Spike strips were deployed again, this time by the Arkansas City Police Department, at the intersection of 81st Road and U.S. 166, and the vehicle’s right rear tire was flattened.

Arkansas City police set spike strips on the U.S. 77 roundabout and the vehicle’s remaining tire was flattened.

Martin continued through the roundabout and drove south on the U.S. 77 bypass, despite all of the tires on his vehicle being flattened.

He then turned west on Madison Avenue and north on F Street, drove four blocks north of Madison. Martin then abandoned his vehicle and fled westbound on foot.

Police officers and sheriff’s deputies apprehended him approximately 30 yards from his vehicle.

Law enforcement personnel then discovered that Martin had a firearm, drug-use paraphernalia, drug-sale paraphernalia and approximately half a pound of methamphetamine in his possession.

He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated weapons violations by a convicted felon, criminal use of weapons, driving with a canceled or suspended driver’s license, felony fleeing or eluding law enforcement, no drug tax stamp, no proof of insurance, possession of drug-sale paraphernalia, possession of drug-use paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell methamphetamine and reckless driving.

Martin was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in lieu of $25,800 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City and $225 bond through Arkansas City Municipal Court.

He remained in custody at the time of this report.
