Members of the Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Board overwhelmingly chose Ark City’s Walmart Supercenter as the July recipient of the chamber’s STAR Award.

The STAR (Small Trade Achievement Recognition) Award is given monthly to one of more than 300 chamber member businesses in the area. It is awarded when a business owner or staff member has shown exemplary achievement in community involvement or other outstanding accomplishments.

Walmart, located at 2701 N. Summit St., was honored not only for its ongoing delivery of excellent services to the community through its retail store, pharmacy, grocery and vision clinic, but also for its willingness to collaborate with the city’s businesses, civic groups, and nonprofit organizations and to be a positive voice in the Ark City community.

Walmart encourages its employees to become involved with various community service opportunities, such as helping with Meals on Wheels every Monday. Several individual employees also volunteer with various community organizations on their own.

The local Walmart contributes to the DARE program to help to combat drugs in the schools and community. Its vision center provides free cleanings and repairs at the commodity days at Angels in the Attic. This year, Walmart helped with the USD 470 open enrollment efforts at the store.

The store has given $8,000 so far this year through the Walmart Foundation to benefit various community organizations and plans to give a total of $11,000 by the end of this year. It also gave generously to the recent community fireworks show and is collaborating with Angels in the Attic to provide school supplies for local schools with their “Stuff the Bus” event.

Manna Ministries, the Ark City local food distribution ministry, always has received foods from the Ark City Walmart, with last year’s amount totaling $48,000. Store manager Mark Chickadonz served food at a recent police and firefighters recognition luncheon, and also is involved with RISE Cowley and the chamber’s Workforce and Education Committee.

“The Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce salutes the Ark City Walmart for their outstanding contributions to our community and are proud to have them as a member of our chamber family,” said Chamber President Kammy Downs.
