The Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce seeks interested businesses to join its annual downtown holiday shopping promotional event.
All businesses joining in Christmas in the City will receive a free ticket to the Nov. 15 Noon Networking Luncheon, “Boosting Your Business with Social Media.”
Christmas in the City is a month-long event to promote buying locally and provide community festivities for the holidays in the Arkansas City Downtown Historic District, according to a news release from the chamber of commerce.
The event kicks off on Merry Monday, which will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20.
Merry Monday again will include food trucks located near Ben Givens Center City Park, which will be provided by local nonprofits and civic groups.
Festivities will include the community tree lighting and downtown business lighting, a service of Thanksgiving, Santa Claus, carriage rides and holiday music from local artists. The event also will provide two horse-drawn carriages for shoppers looking to pick up a few deals on Merry Monday.
There also will be horse-drawn carriage rides from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 25 and Dec. 2. This year’s carriages will take guests on a slightly longer route from Ben Givens Park to Washington Avenue and back, for just $2 or one canned good per rider. Canned goods and cash will be donated to Angels in the Attic.
Nov. 25 is Small Business Saturday and the chamber is looking to promote local small businesses’ holiday retail events that day.
Dec. 2 will include a Santa Run and other fun activities. The third annual Santa Run is a 2-mile walk-run that starts at 10 a.m.
Prizes will be given at the end of the run, and participants will receive a T-shirt, cookies and hot cocoa.
The movie “Elf” will be shown for free at 1 p.m. at the Arkansas City Public Library. This event will include cookies and milk for the children, as well as a free showing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” following story time. At 4 p.m., the Burford Theatre will provide an interactive showing of “Elf.”
More activities will be announced soon, according to the chamber of commerce.
A window decorating contest is being conducted by participating businesses and anyone may vote between Nov. 25 and Dec. 15. Each vote costs one penny.
Funds collected from the window decorating contest will be given to the Arkansas City blessing boxes.
The contest winner will be announced Dec. 18. Voting will be conducted at the participating businesses and a list of those businesses will be announced soon.
Finally, a “Selfie with an Elfie” contest using social media also will be available to any business that wishes to participate and gives customers a chance to win Chamber Bucks, which may be spent at any chamber member business. Call the chamber office at (620) 442-0230 for Christmas in the City details or to sign up.
