It is getting close to “the most wonderful time of year,” when the bustle of the Christmas season soon will be upon us.

Christmas in the CityThe Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce, along with the Arkansas City Convention and Visitors Bureau, is excited to sponsor Christmas in the City once again. We will kick off our Christmas in the City celebration with Merry Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 21.

We will have live music, local entertainment, food vendors, store specials, carriage rides, pictures with Santa and the lighting of the Christmas tree at City Hall. This will be an event sure to get people into the holiday spirit.

Every Saturday from Thanksgiving to Christmas, we will have fun activities in our downtown. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday, there will be horse-drawn carriage rides. The cost is $2 or two nonperishable food items. The items collected will be distributed to the local food pantries.

Dec. 10 will be “Shop and Celebrate Saturday.” There will be a Santa Run at 10 a.m. Registration forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office. The Twelve Days of Christmas Crawl will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ten merchants will offer “door buster” specials for 12 minutes each.

Also on Dec. 10, Ark City Arts will have a children’s art-making project from 1 to 3 p.m. Yoga Synergy, located at 110 S. Summit St., will have a children’s class at 10 a.m. and an adult class at 1 p.m. to create an all-natural beauty product. The charge for the three classes is $5 per person.

The Burford Theatre will open its grand doors and show “White Christmas” at 4 p.m. Dec. 10. It will be a great day to spend time in Arkansas City!

The windows of Arkansas City will be decked out from Nov. 26 to Dec. 16 for the window decorating contest. Voting can be done at the participating business or at the Chamber of Commerce office. Participate for a penny per vote — the proceeds will go to a local charity.

Another fun activity is the “Show Me the Light” scavenger hunt. Participating businesses will have the light bulb ornament displayed somewhere in their store. Pick up an entry form at the Chamber of Commerce office, located at 106 S. Summit St., to play this fun game.

The winner will receive a gift basket with gift cards and merchandise valued at more than $600.
