The Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas in the City event will kick off with Merry Monday on Nov. 20 in downtown Arkansas City.

Christmas in the City logoLive music will begin and food vendors will open at 4 p.m. The festivities will continue until 7:30 p.m.

Food vendors include Ark City Christian Academy, the Ark City Ministerial Alliance and M&M Meals for the Soul.

The Ministerial Alliance also will conduct a service of Thanksgiving.

Horsedrawn carriage rides will be available for canned food donations from 4 to 7:30 p.m.

Carriage ride sponsors for the event are KanOkla Networks, Graves Drug and Walmart.

Santa Claus will arrive by carriage at 6:15 p.m. and children can take pictures with him by donating canned food or a child’s gift. The community tree lighting will take place at 6:30 p.m.

The fourth-grade student winner of the “What Christmas Means to Me” writing contest will flip the switch that lights up the downtown holiday lights and Christmas tree.

The Selfie with an Elfie contest also begins Nov. 20. In addition, there will be a window decorating contest. Votes are a penny each.

Businesses participating in the window decorating contest are Alderbrook Village, Angels in the Attic, Brick’s Restaurant, Burger Junkie, Cox Communications, Farm Bureau Financial Services—Jill Hunter, Graves Drug, Ike’s Donuts, Land Rush Antique Mall, McDonald’s Sewing and Vacuum, MidAmerican Credit Union, Orscheln Farm and Home, Riverstone Family Dental, Schmidt Jewelers, Taylor Drug, Transformations, and Union State Bank.

The winner will be announced Dec. 16 and the proceeds will be given to the blessing boxes of Ark City.
