Some stories are evergreen, their themes and lessons standing the test of time and connecting with readers in generation after generation. Reconnect with Catherine Marshall’s beloved Christy as it celebrates its 50th anniversary with a new edition!

As 19-year-old teacher Christy struggles to find acceptance in her new home of Cutter Gap, some see her — and her one-room school — as a threat to their way of life.

Her faith is challenged and her heart is torn between two strong men with conflicting views about how to care for the families of the Cove. Yearning to make a difference, will Christy’s determination and devotion be enough?

There is something wonderful about rediscovering an old favorite.Christy

I won’t say “forgotten,” because I never forgot the book existed, but I hadn’t read it many years.

Catherine Marshall’s seminal novel, Christy, was just as emotive as I remember.

The first time I read Christy was when I stumbled upon it at my great-grandmother’s house.

“On that November afternoon when I first saw Cutter Cap, the crumbling chimney of Alice Henderson’s cabin stood stark against the sky, blackened by the flames that had consumed the house.”

I was immediately hooked. Marshall’s voice is very strong and distinct.

Christy quickly begins to feel like a real person. Her narrative quickly pulls you fully into her world.

“It was one of those moments that would be as sharp and real in my mind, years later as it was that January morning.”

As she takes us on her journey, we discover a harsh yet beautiful world that is now lost.

The conditions in which the mountain people live are not glossed over, but handled in a believable manner that is not gratuitous.

For me, the beauty of Marshall’s story, the complexity of the familiar characters and my enjoyment of the story were deepened by re-reading this novel.

Happy memories of afternoons spent with my Grandma Helen, discussing books we were reading, came flooding back, as did the stories she told about her childhood.

While this novel might not have the same nostalgia factor for everyone, I highly recommend giving it a whirl.
