Cowley College sophomore Morgan Bruce, who saw her cousins, Jordan and Madison McDowell, crowned Queen Alalah, now will have her turn in the spotlight after she was named one of five finalists for Queen Alalah LXXXV. Coronation is set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Robert Brown Theatre.

Bruce is the daughter of Phillip and Michelle Bruce, and the granddaughter of Jim and Sherry McDowell, all of Arkansas City, and the late Marge and Herb Bruce. She has one sister, Audrianna, 15.

Bruce graduated in 2015 from Arkansas City High School. At ACHS, she was involved in tennis, Student Council, KAY and the National Honor Society. She said the decision to attend Cowley was an easy one.

“The school has a tight-knit feel to it and it also helps that it is less expensive than a four-year school,” Bruce said. “I love the people here, especially those in the admissions office and science department.”

At Cowley, she is involved in the Cowley Activity Awareness Team (CAAT) and is a student ambassador.

Away from Cowley, the pre-dentistry major is busy working three jobs. She is employed at Rogers Family Dentistry, serves as a nanny for Drs. Scott and Nicole Rogers, and also works at an area law office.

Bruce also has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters for the past four years and volunteers at First Baptist Church in Ark City with the AWANA program.

In addition to enjoying the carnival, parade and tasty Arkalalah food, Bruce has attended nearly every coronation since she was a child and said she was proud to see her cousins crowned Queen Alalah.

“Ever since I was little, I wanted to be one of those queens on stage,” Bruce said. “I am honored — this is a huge blessing and I am excited for Arkalalah to get here.”

After Cowley, she plans to transfer to Oklahoma State University to major in biochemistry. But for now, she plans to enjoy the festivities leading up to coronation with the other queen candidates.

“The five of us are so close and I am excited for us to become even closer,” Bruce said.
