The National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) announced the 2015-16 NATYCAA Cup standings on June 13 at its annual awards luncheon. After finishing 21st in the standings during the 2014-15 academic year, the Cowley College athletic program moved up to 15th in the 2015-16 year.
The NATYCAA Cup program began in 2004 to highlight excellence in two-year athletics based on success in championship competition. The awards are given to National Junior College Athletic Association member colleges based on performance at national championship events throughout the academic year. A first-place finish warrants 20 points, second place 19 points and so on.
Iowa Central Community College captured its eighth straight NATYCAA Cup. Cowley improved six spots in the Cup standings thanks to nine of its programs earning the opportunity to compete at national tournaments.
The volleyball team placed among the top six teams in the nation for the 11th straight year, while the men’s tennis team placed in the top 10 for the 10th consecutive year.
The women’s tennis team placed in the top 10 for the eighth straight year, the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams placed among the top 20 teams nationally, and the indoor track and field teams finished in the top 25.
The women’s basketball and baseball teams also competed at national tournaments for the first time since 1989 and 2009, respectively.
“This is a credit to our coaches and fan base, and a tribute to the Tiger Booster Club and administration that give so much to Cowley athletics,” said Cowley athletic director Shane Larson.
