The Cowley College Board of Trustees voted unanimously April 17 to award a posthumous degree to former sophomore Garrett Misora.

Misora died in a motor vehicle accident late last November.

He was attending Cowley College on an ACT Scholarship. He was a Winfield native who graduated from Winfield High School in 2015.

Misora was involved in the Cowley pep band, was a member of the Academic Excellence Challenge team and worked in the campus library.

In addition, he was involved in local Boy Scouts Troop 318 and was an Eagle Scout.

The recommendation of Cowley College’s academic affairs team to award Misora with a degree posthumously was met with somber agreement.

The honor likely will be presented at this year’s commencement ceremony.

Cowley College President Dennis Rittle said Misora represented the college’s four core values and praised the work of Harold Arnett, vice president of academic affairs, in making the honorary degree a possibility.
