This is a unique summer event that highlights quirky sites, historical stops and local favorites. Treasure hunters seek out 10 locations across Cowley County, which can be completed in a weekend or found throughout the summer.

Individuals interested in participating may pick up clues and a treasure hunt photo album at:

  • Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce — 106 S. Summit St.;
  • Arkansas City Public Library — 120 E. Fifth Ave.;
  • Burden City Hall — 401 N. Main St.;
  • Grouse Valley Grill — 206th Road in Dexter;
  • Udall City Building — 110 S. Main St.;
  • Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce — 123 E. Ninth Ave.;
  • Winfield Public Library — 605 College St.

Included with the album is a certificate from Walgreens in Arkansas City to print treasure hunt pictures. Clues and GPS coordinates also can be printed.

To find the treasures, participants must decipher the clue or find the location using the GPS coordinates that are provided. However, if they have trouble figuring out the clue, or don’t have access to a GPS or computer, the tourism officials at the Arkansas City or Winfield chambers of commerce would be happy to assist.

Once the clue is deciphered, participants will travel to the site of the treasure and take a selfie or a photo of their fellow travelers at the location. The site should be clearly identifiable in the picture.

Participants are not required to visit all 10 stops, but those who do find all 10 treasures are asked to stop by the Arkansas City or Winfield chambers of commerce by Sept. 9 to be entered into a drawing for a gift basket filled with local goodies and gift certificates.

To enter the drawing, bring the printed photos or show the tourism officials there the photos on a phone or mobile device.

Stone arch bridge maps and barn quilt maps also are available at the chambers and online. They make a great addition to summer treasure hunt drives.
