A 5.6-magnitude earthquake rocked several Plains states around 7 a.m. Sept. 3 and could be felt for more than a minute in Arkansas City.

The epicenter of the earthquake was near Pawnee, Okla.

“The whole family was in bed upstairs at the cabin,” said Jill Wineinger. “We scooped the kids up and ran outside. I don’t trust this 1920s Silverdale stone.”

While many Arkansas City residents reported feeling the quake, not much was reported in the way of damage.

First Presbyterian Church reported damage to the ceiling of its sanctuary.

The damage, discovered the morning of Sept. 4, was limited to a 15- by 24-foot area, with debris landing on the floor below, according to Janis Haynes Gregg.
