Enrollment is under way at the Arkansas City Public School District for the 2018-19 school year.
The district still is scheduling screenings for the pre-kindergarten program. This program is for children 3 to 4 years old.
Parents interested scheduling a screening are asked to call (620) 441-2075.
This program is free and is offered in each of the neighborhood elementary schools.
“We’ll be entering our third year of this blended program,” said Peg Dokken-Opat, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.
“Early childhood education is a top priority of ours and we’re seeing a lot of success.”
In next year’s kindergarten class, 94 percent of the students will have participated in Pre-K, according to Dokken-Opat.
Students benefit from the use of an evidence-based curriculum to increase kindergarten readiness skills, according to Cowley County Head Start Director Caroline Bruce.
In addition to academics, children also play, socialize, learn valuable skills, enjoy nutritious snacks and become accustomed to life in the school setting.
“Children thrive when teachers create nurturing, well-managed settings, and provide frequent and engaging opportunities to learn,” Bruce said.
Parents of current K-12 students may register online, via PowerSchool, at usd470.powerschool.com.
Those with new students may register from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 25’26 at their child’s respective schools.
To register new students, parents will need to bring address verification in the form of a utility bill or lease agreement, immunization records, and a birth certificate. All children should have current immunization records prior to the start of school.
