Jill Hunter, lifelong resident of Arkansas City, was named the grand marshal of the 87th Annual Arkalalah celebration.
This year’s Arkalalah chairman, Zach Stoy, made the announcement during the Oct. 18 Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce Coffee.
With business peers surrounding her, Hunter realized that she was to be named grand marshal when Stoy mention the Bobby Estus Bike Run — a fundraiser that she created and manages
which provides bicycles to kids who can not afford to buy them.
“Shocked, totally shocked,” she said of the announcement.
Hunter received her grand marshal jacket during the coffee.
“I’ve known for three years who I wanted to name grand marshal.” Stoy said. “I told the other guys to choose someone else.”
“This was one of my goals,” Hunter said. “I’ll have to make some new ones now.”
Hunter, a local insurance agent, will attend the Queen Alalah coronation Friday night and will lead the Big Parade on Saturday afternoon.
She was also intricately involved in the creation of Angels in the Attic.
