This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration of Unity will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The event will be held at the Robert Brown Theatre, located at 215 S. Second St. on Cowley College’s campus in Arkansas City.

It will feature guest speaker Dan Givens, a retired Arkansas City Police Department police chief.

Givens was named chief of police in 2002 after Oren Skiles retired as chief.

However, Givens’ career with the department started in 1976.

After a brief time away from the department, pursuing a railroad career, he returned to ACPD.

Givens retired in 2006 after almost 29 years with the police department.

In addition to his remarks, there will be a special jazz tribute to the legacy of King, presented by the Arkansas City High School Jazz Band.

Reflections of area pastors will be shared and the Spirit of Progress Award will be presented.
