Mid-Continent Financial LLC will be host to a free document shredding event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 21.
The company, which offers financial services, also is offering a fee hot dog lunch.
There are some documents that should be kept indefinitely, such as trusts, deeds, auto titles, wills, estate planning, medical history details, and Social Security and pension documents.
But when trusts, deeds, wills and similar documents are updated, it is suggested that older copies be disposed of properly. Shredding is the preferred method.
Investment summaries and tax returns should be kept for seven years. Expired insurance policies should be kept for three years.
The following should be kept for one year or less:
- credit card statements;
- household bills;
- bank statements;
- pay stubs;
- cancelled personal checks.
Any of these documents that are received electronically should be deleted on a similar timeline.
