Miles for Morgan, a poker run to benefit a local infant, will take place July 15.
Morgan Marquez was born Dec. 9, 2016. Less than a month later, she was diagnosed with a heart murmur by a doctor in Wichita.
However, the heart murmur was not the only bad news Marquez received. She also was diagnosed with congenital heart disease.
Marquez was flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, that same day and has been hospitalized since.
Her family is able to visit her often, thanks in part to the donations that have been made thus far.
At first, parents Corey Marquez and Samantha McDonald were reluctant to reach out or accept help.
“We wanted to do it ourselves, and keep to ourselves and some close family and friends,” McDonald said.
“We’re a little bit stubborn.”
However, she said the family is very appreciative of the help they have received.
Poker run details
The poker run is set to start at 9 a.m., with registration at Britt’s Bar and Grill, located at 1419 N. Eighth St.
All bikes should be out by 11 a.m.
The second stop will be Grouse Valley Grill in Dexter, followed by Mandy’s in Shidler, Oklahoma, and then Tom’s Place in Burbank, Oklahoma.
The run will take the participants back to Britt’s and is scheduled to end at 3 p.m.
Apart from expressing her gratitude, McDonald said she’d like poker run participants to “ride safe.”
Some progress for Morgan
Morgan Marquez remains under the care of Children’s Mercy in Kansas City.
Her family spends as much time as possible with her, including her two older siblings, Tyler and Madison.
Since Morgan’s hospitalization, she has been diagnosed with several heart issues and also has undergone open heart surgery.
Despite several setbacks since January, Morgan recently was weaned off her heart medication.
In order to leave the hospital, she will have to remain off the medicine and demonstrate she is growing well.
