Arkansas City is home to a brand-new drink and snow cone stop, just in time for the dog days of summer.
Penguin Paradice appeared, quite literally, overnight in the parking lot next to the Twice the Ice machine on North Summit Street, between Casey’s General Store and Ark Valley Credit Union.
The brightly colored blue semi-permanent structure doesn’t have any signs on it yet, but it definitely is open for business.
Ken and Kandi Rich opened Penguin Paradice with their children, Triston, Taryn and Tayeah.
“We’re here until the end of September,” said Taryn Rich.
Penguin Paradice opened June 5 and had steady business all of last week.
“We’re going to have to reorder some of our flavors,” said Kandi Rich. There are 38 flavors available from this tiny establishment. “You can mix any of them together,” said Taryn Rich.
Additional flavors are available at no extra charge and the snow cones range in price from $2 to $5 apiece.
“We have one sugar-free flavor … sugar-free cherry,” said Kandi Rich.
Those who wish to enjoy their treats in the heat are welcome to sit at one of the picnic tables located in front of the building. The tables feature brightly striped umbrellas.
For now, Penguin Paradice only is able to accept cash, but there are plans to add the capacity to accept cards as soon as the equipment comes in.
The establishment opens at noon and stays open until 9 p.m. each day.
And, in perhaps the best news of all, the snow cone shop already plans on coming back next summer.
