Participants in SCKMC Landrush’s 2016 Kids 2K race slide up and down the mud mounds obstacle. Several new obstacles and an additional cycling race have been added for the 2017 event.

Additional help is needed in the form of “obstacle observers” — teams of two who oversee one of the 12 obstacles to ensure both participant safety and fair play — as well as parking attendants to direct traffic and cleanup crew members.

“It takes a lot of manpower to put together an event like the Landrush,” said Clayton Pappan, South Central Kansas Medical Center’s director of marketing.

“While we have a lot of volunteers from our hospital staff and their families, we could always use more help.”

Final setup for the event will begin at 6 a.m. Aug. 26 and will include preparing vendor booths, setting up observer tents and water stations throughout the course, and much more.

Obstacle observers are asked to check in at the race registration tent by 8 a.m. for their assignments.

Opening ceremonies, courtesy of the American Legion Post 10 Riders from Winfield, will begin at 8:45, with the first race starting at 9 a.m. and the final race beginning at 11 a.m.

“This is a great event for everyone involved, whether you are up to the challenge of running or not,” Pappan said. “Our volunteers have a blast.”

Those interested in volunteering should contact the event’s volunteer coordinator, Darci Sampson, by calling (620) 441-5744 or emailing her at darcis@sckrmc.org.
