Last August, South Central Kansas Medical Center was host to its first major fundraising event, the SCKMC Landrush. The 12-obstacle 5K race had 135 participants and raised more than $9,000 in its inaugural year. Now hospital staff are preparing for the 2016 fundraiser on Aug. 27.

“This year should be even bigger and better,” said Clayton Pappan, SCKMC’s chief operations officer and chairperson for the race’s planning committee.

“We wrapped up last year with a debriefing meeting to really break down what went well and where we could improve. That is exactly where the committee picked back up this year, taking those ideas and running with it — literally.”

The 2016 Landrush will have a new course layout for participants and an expanded vendor area for spectators.

However, the biggest change is the addition of a 2K kids fun run for ages 8-14.

“The minimum age for last year’s run was something the committee debated a lot,” Pappan said.

“We eventually agreed not to allow children to participate, mainly because we didn’t know ourselves just how challenging the obstacles would be. But then we noticed after the event several kids running the course, playing in the mud and just having a great time.”

The fun run is an untimed event that will take place on a shortened track. The course will have six obstacles, each selected with the safety of children in mind.

Another change is the addition of corporate teams. Businesses that would like to pay for their employees’ registration fees will be provided with a unique code for team members to enter on the race registration website. Use of the code waives all up-front fees for the runner and allows for the business to be invoiced for its team.

“Many employers have health programs for their staff, and obviously health is at the core of our mission for this event. We were approached about the possibility of corporate teams and group invoicing. It made sense, so we made it happen,” Pappan said.

Businesses interested in a corporate team should call Pappan at (620) 442-2500.
