Relay for Life activities are starting this weekend in Arkansas City.

To kick off the season, there will be a garage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ark City Rec Center, located at 225 E. Fifth Ave.

“If you would like to get rid of some of your extra stuff around the house, please feel free to donate it to our garage sale,” said a representative of Relay for Life in Arkansas City.

This fundraiser will be followed by a Facebook online auction to take place over the course of several days.

“There (are) all kinds of things, from homemade quilts to tickets to ball games (and) hotel packages. As of last count, there were over 100 things donated and stuff still (is) being sent. It starts at 5 p.m. April 28 and ends at 5 p.m. April 30,” said Jennie Steelman, a Relay for Life coordinator.

May activities

A U Paint It fund raiser is set to take place May 20. There will be opportunities at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Tickets are on sale by any member of the Relay team. They are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.

“We are also selling luminary bags — they are $10 each,” Steelman said.

White luminaries signify the memory of a person, purple is to honor someone who has had cancer and gold honors caregivers.

These bags, like the tickets to the U Paint It fundraiser, can be purchased from team members.

Relay main event

The 2017 Relay for Life main event will be from 6 p.m. to midnight June 9 at the Agri-Business Building, located at 712 W. Washington Ave.

“We are still looking for sponsors, survivors, caregivers and teams. This year’s theme is the ‘Power of Purple,’” Steelman said.

Each team is picking a sport to decorate its area.

“As of now, we have nine teams and would love more,” Steelman said.
