Luke and Blanche Schmidt opened the doors of their jewelry store, located at 226 S. Summit St., on Sept. 9, 1999.

The couple, who were wed that February, previously remodeled the building with the help of friends.

From the ripping out of carpet, paneling and lattice work to applying new paint, the remodel was extensive.

“This building last had a craft store in it,” said Blanche Schmidt.

Now the heart of their store is their desire to help loved ones to express and celebrate their life experiences.

“Jewelry is about relationships — almost every piece of jewelry someone owns is connected … to a loved one,” Schmidt said, “whether it’s a wedding ring, graduation gift, mother’s ring, or something they inherited from a family member or mark(ing) a special occasion in their life.”

The Schmidts not only provide pre-created pieces, but they also perform custom design work for customers.

“We have cried with, listened to and shared in our customers’ lives as they experience loss, but also as they experience joy,” she said.

“Our goal is to help people share the love they feel with one another, and mark it with a piece of jewelry that is of a quality that will last and be worthy of being passed on to the next generation.”

Repair and other Schmidt services

The services that Schmidt Jewelers offers aren’t limited to selling new jewelry.

“We specialize in on-site jewelry repair,” Schmidt said. “Rings sized, broken chains, etc. — we do it all.”

The minor in-store repair services include battery replacement, crystals, quartz movements and resetting pins in the band.

Schmidt also carries a selection of new watch bands.

“(We) also do custom design work and remounting of stones or remaking rings, necklaces (and more),” she said.

The store also provides engraving services, which aren’t limited to engraving in metal. Engraving glass and plastic also are option.

Schmidt also offers foil transfer, a process similar to how names are printed on Bibles.

In addition, Schmidt offers insurance appraisal services.

Custom design and products

Jewelry of all types is available at the store, but there also is a selection of watches, clocks and gift items, such as picture frames, tie tacks and money clips.

Diamonds and gemstones also are among the many offerings at Schmidt Jewelers.

Whether the ring needed is bridal in nature, a class ring or a mother’s ring, the Schmidts can find or design the perfect piece.

“Our jeweler received People’s Choice in 2016 for his custom design at the Kansas Jewelers Association annual meeting,” said Blanche Schmidt. “In 2012 and 2013, his pieces won first place in the Open/Professional category.”

Professional associations

Schmidt Jewelers has been a member of the Independent Jewelers Organization for 15 years, the Kansas Jewelers Association (KJA) — both Luke and Blanche Schmidt serve on KJA’s board of directors — and the Retail Jewelers Organization.

It is through those groups that the Schmidts attend jewelry-buying shows twice a year, looking for the latest styles.

The groups also provide up-to-date education on gemstones, sales, marketing and customer service.

“We have been to Antwerp (Diamond Company in Glasgow) to purchase diamonds twice — and have retained our connections with our Antwerp diamond sources,” said Blanche Schmidt. In 2002, she received her Certificate in Diamond Grading from the Gemological Institute of America.
