The Arkansas City FFA chapter was awarded $5,503 by the USD 470 Board of Education on Sept. 12 to attend the National FFA Convention next month.

The group has qualified to participate in the convention, with approximately 12 students slated to attend.

They also will be honored as a three-gold-star chapter — an award given out only to groups that are top chapters in the nation in planning and carrying out development activities.

Some of the activities the local FFA students have coordinated in order to receive this honor are:

  • FFA community labor auction;
  • FFA unplugged lock-in;
  • Salvation Army adopt-a-family coin drive;
  • annual Ag Day on the farm for elementary students.

The Ark City chapter will be recognized as sixth place in the state of Kansas.

The group requested only part of the $5,503 needed in order to attend, but the school board members chose instead to give the group the whole amount.
