WINFIELD — Cowley County’s namesake, Lt. Matthew Cowley, will make a rare appearance at the 2017 Cowley County Fair.

As part of Cowley County’s sesquicentennial this year, there will be a special celebration from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 4 on the Midway Stage at the Winfield Fairgrounds.

The Cowley County Historical Society Museum presentation of “Voices from the Past” will include dynamic portrayals filled with historical facts and folklore.

In addition to Lt. Cowley, who is being portrayed by Stephen Markley, Col. E.C. Manning (Clyde Vassey) and James Land (Dr. Chris Wilson) will re-enact the heated claim dispute of these influential men.

Brad Beeson, of Miles Funeral Home, will portray one of the earliest professions during the settlement of Cowley County — funeral director, also known as an undertaker. And Prairie Ridge schoolteacher Miss Montra (Stephanie Angelmyer) will speak to the parents of her pupils as the new school year kicks off.

A time capsule presentation will end the stage event. A limited number of Cowley County Community Guides and wooden nickels commemorating the county’s 150th birthday will be available to the public. There will be a display reflecting on the history of Cowley County under the grandstands throughout the entire fair.

Further information on this and other sesquicentennial events are listed on the county website at www.cowleycounty.org.
