Arkansas City High School sophomore Alexis Van Dyke recently was honored with a Scholastic Art and Writing Awards silver medal for her drawing, “Do Not Touch Me.”

Since 1923, the Scholastic Awards have recognized creative teenagers from across the country.

By receiving a Scholastic Art and Writing Award, Van Dyke joins a legacy of celebrated authors and artists, including Richard Avedon, Truman Capote, Lena Dunham, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, Andy Warhol and more, according to a letter from Virginia McEnerney, executive director of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

More than 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted by students in grades 7-12 this year.

Receiving this silver medal places Van Dyke within the top 1 percent of all submissions nationally. Mike Elliott is her current art teacher.

This information was provided by USD 470 Public Relations Director Alisha Call.
