Visitors to Cowley County are welcome to visit the historic bridges of the area, including many rural stone arch bridges.
There are approximately 1,700 stone arch bridges remaining in the United States, and more than 18 of them are right here in Cowley County.
When seeking these bridges, keep in mind that most of them are surrounded by private property.
While the roads over the bridges are public, it is possible that the land around and under the bridge might require permission from the land owner to access.
The Arkansas City and Winfield area chambers of commerce both are able to assist visitors in the search for these rare bridges.
The Arkansas City chamber is located at 106 S. Summit St. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays.
The Winfield chamber is located at 123 E. Ninth Ave. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
A bridge-finding map is available at http://www.cowleycounty.org/wp-content/uploads/Bridge-map-legal-size-3-13-154.pdf or at either of the chamber offices.
