Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254 will be at the Arkansas City Middle School at 1 p.m. Dec. 20 to announce the top five winners of VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest.

Each year, more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the Patriot’s Pen essay contest nationwide. There were 72 local entries this year.

The national winner receives $5,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each state winner earning a minimum of $500 at the national level.
