The Arkansas City Police Department arrested a Winfield female April 13 on multiple counts of theft after a fraudulent check was cashed in Arkansas City.
Tekeisha Lashawn Skwiat, 36, was arrested on suspicion of felony counts of forgery and making false information, as well as misdemeanor counts of identity theft and theft of less than $1,000.
She was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in lieu of $11,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City. Skwiat since has posted bond and been released.
Police were dispatched about 11:05 a.m. April 4 for a report of a fraudulent check that was cashed at Country Mart, located at 616 N. Summit St. The reporting party was contacted and interviewed.
Officers determined that an unknown female had cashed a check from an account that had been closed since 2015. Further investigation led to the identification of Skwiat as a possible suspect.
Police contacted the owner of the check, who reported that it had been stolen during a burglary that occurred in Wichita. Further follow-up investigation was conducted and a search warrant was obtained.
The warrant was executed April 13 at Skwiat’s residence at 523 Broad St. in Winfield. Evidence of the forgery and thefts was collected, and Skwiat was taken into custody at the scene.
